Sun, sea and sand! Three elements that a beach lifeguard grows to know and love and for those who enjoy this particular lifestyle, then there probably isn’t a better summer job to be had!

Perhaps you have landed your dream job on the east coast where you will be patrolling the waters of South Beach in Miami or maybe you will be getting sand between your toes on Huntington Beach on the West Coast of California. Your task will be the same, to save lives and protect the thousands of people lapping up the sun from any harm.

If distant dreams of Baywatch are your main incentive for wanting to be a lifeguard, then it’s probably safe to assume you are barking up the wrong beach! As soaked in sun and blue skies as it can sometimes be, the work of a lifeguard is tough and serious and in some situations, a case of life and death for the people under your care on the sand or by the pool.

Of course, you can’t just stroll up to your local beach and start saving lives. In order to be a lifeguard, you obviously need to be a strong swimmer, but you also need to be properly trained and have earned the appropriate certificates.

So, you still want to be a lifeguard but how do you go about seeking out lifeguard jobs? There are lots of beaches and pools, so there could be plenty of availability, especially during the summer months.

In the United States, assuming you have been lifeguard certified by an organization such as “The American Red Cross Lifeguarding program” or the “American Lifeguard Association” then these are often good places to start your job hunt. It is probably also worthwhile visiting your local swimming pools and water parks as well as the lifeguard stations at your beach and asking the men and women lifeguards themselves, discovering how they applied for jobs and where they obtained their own life saving certificates.

The job of a lifeguard can certainly be fun, but it is also an extremely serious and noble pursuit, one in which lives are saved and tragedies prevented on a daily basis. According to sandiego.gov, in 2010 there were almost 24 million visitors to its beaches with more than 4000 water rescues along with 5000 other rescues, with not a single drowning whilst lifeguards were on duty.
